FOR MOST people a chance to perform at the Oscars would be a dream come true.

When the Black Dyke Band, nominated in the best film song category with "That's All", from Babe: Pig in the City, were asked to attend the Hollywood ceremony they said they did indeed have a duty to their public - in Bournemouth.

The brass band, from Yorkshire, could have played in front of some of the most famous names in the world, not to mention a billion television viewers, but they turned the offer down when they discovered it clashed with a previous booking.

After all, what's instant fame when you have sold 1,600 tickets for the Bournemouth Winter Gardens?

Geoffrey Whiteley, the band's administrator, said: "It's not that we don't want to go but we are people of our word and the concert had already been booked."

The band has featured in other films but this is the first time it has been nominated for an Oscar.
