BBC chief's pledge
The new chairman of the BBC, Sir Christopher Bland, has said in a letter to National Heritage Secretary Virginia Bottomley that the corporation's first responsibility was to the licence payer and that he promised to ensure editorial independence.
Meanwhile, BBC newscasters will be heard across America from today as the World Service launches a new international news programme in co-production with public broadcasters in the United States.
