Bosnia appeal

THE INDEPENDENT today launches an appeal in support of charities working to alleviate the desperate sufferings of people in Bosnia-Herzegovina.

On page 10, we describe the work of some of the agencies operating in former Yugoslavia, from the British Red Cross and Save the Children, to smaller organisations such as Scottish European Aid.

For every donation readers make to one or more of them, the Independent will add 10 per cent, up to pounds 30,000.

Volunteers and staff of international relief agencies are redoubling efforts to help the 2.7 million people who are entirely dependent on aid as winter bites, with temperatures as low as minus 25C.

Bedding, clothing, plastic sheeting for shelter, food and medicine have got through to some towns, but not enough to meet demand. Roads are hazardous, and local commanders have prevented some deliveries.
