Two 10-year-old boys died and their 14-year-old friend was critically injured last night when they were hit by a car as they tried to cross a road in Croxteth Hall Lane, Liverpool. Police said it appeared the boys had been running across the road. The driver was treated for shock.

Witnesses said the street was not lit and a police spokesman said that would form part of an inquiry as experts began examining the car. The accident happened outside the home of John Bailey, who said: "When I heard the noise I ran out and the driver of the car came running out of it screaming and shouting `Help me, help me'. I saw three boys lying in the road."
