Britain : UK to train Argentine cadets
Diplomats in London have revealed plans for Argentine cadets to train at Sandhurst military academy, writes Hugh O'Shaughnessy. The British and Argentine governments are discussing the arrangements as part of a project for military co-operation that would include joint military exercises and training.
Argentina's president, Carlos Menem, has for years sought a rapprochement with the UK, and the sending of Argentine forces to former Yugoslavia, Cyprus and the Gulf was part of the strategy to get closer to the western powers. His foreign minister has revealed that he tried to have troops stationed as close as possible to British units.
