A British tourist has been shot dead in the Congo after a dispute with a police patrol. The man, from the London area, was travelling with his wife and four other Britons on an overland journey across the Central African country when he was killed on Sunday. It is unclear what sparked the dispute, or whether it was a Congolese policeman who shot the Briton.

British diplomats were last night trying to find out more about the incident which happened in Sembe, about 50 miles from the border with Cameroon. Meanwhile, the man's parents were also flying out to Brazzaville, the Congolese capital.
