British companies spent a record pounds 8.7bn last year on 226 European acquisitions, according to Acquisitions Monthly. Commercial Union's pounds 201m bid for Union Financiere de France-Banque and BT's pounds 280m purchase of a stake in Telefonica de Espana were two of the largest deals. At the same time, European companies paid pounds 7.1bn for UK companies - against just pounds 4.8bn in 1996.
