Around the World's Markets: LONDON

FOR THE third day running blue chips gave ground with investors switching out of fashionable shares into recovery plays. Footsie fell 45.5 points to 6,420.6 after getting an early boost from the Asda/ Kingfisher merger. The mid-cap index surged 88.9 to 5.796.2 and the small-cap was up 18 to 2,467.1. Asda, up 22.25p to 198.75p, and Tesco, 14.25p to 181.5p, were the best performing Footsie constituents although mining group Billiton was not far behind with a 14p gain to 201.5p.
