A JITTERY START on Wall Street erased early gains on the German stock market, with the DAX 30 closing up 0.1 per cent at 5,229.56.

Car stocks were in demand, with BMW rising 0.66 per cent after saying it expected a "substantially improved" result in the final six months of the year. Volkswagen rose 0.19 per cent while DaimlerChrysler, which reports on today, rose 1.76 per cent.

Deutsche Bank rose 0.53 per cent after meeting expectations with a nearly 20 per cent rise in first half operating profit.
