LEADING SHARES rose for a second day, led by mobile phone group Vodafone AirTouch and boosted by Friday's jump on Wall Street. The FTSE 100 closed up 43.6 points, 0.7 per cent, at 6,375.5. Second liners rose sharply, with the FTSE 250 50.8 points higher at a record 6,173.2 - 27 per cent up this year. The FTSE 100 is up 8.3 per cent in the period.

"Telecoms have been strong, along with some banks, but basically the market has been very lacklustre with the US closed," said Richard Crehan of Morgan Stanley.
