THE INDEX of leading shares closed higher for the 12th time in 14 sessions, propelled by leading oil and bank stocks. The FTSE 100 ended up 49.4 points, or 0.8 per cent, at 6,583.0 - its highest close since 7 July. BP Amoco, Shell, HSBC Holdings and Lloyds TSB addied around 53 points between them. Market turnover was heavy, with 1.589 billion shares changing hands. The figure was swollen by dealings in Vodafone AirTouch which reached 346 million shares.
