US STOCKS fell as concern that the Federal Reserve was shifting gears helped to trigger a broad-based sell-off. Technology stocks were hit hard as well.

"People are starting to conclude that the Fed is not a friendly force," said one analyst.

The Dow Jones finished down 71.58 points, or 0.77 per cent, at 9,274.12, with stocks down nearly across the board, but off the session's worst levels. The Nasdaq fell 46.43 points, or 1.86 per cent, to 2,463.44. The S&P 500 fell 11.02 or 0.87 per cent to 1,261.98.
