THE DOW closed above 10,000 for the first time, and this time it may hold. Mayor Rudolph Giuliani joined senior market executives in throwing Dow 10,000 hats to the trading floor at the market's close.

"We'll stay above the 10,000 level, though it's going to be a volatile market," said Andrew Damm, a fund manager with BlackRock Inc. "It does seem the market is broadening out."

The Dow rose 184.54 points on the day, 1.9 per cent, to 10,006.78.
