STOCKS WERE mixed on Wall Street yesterday after the market struggled to extend the previous day's rally, ahead of a key report on inflation.

The Dow Jones industrial average ended up just 1.59, or 0.01 per cent, at 10,789.39, after backing off from a gain of more than 100 points. The technology-laden Nasdaq index fell 15.49 points, 0.6 per cent, to 2,549.49.

The retreat in stocks followed a drop in Treasury bonds on the last leg of an auction of US Treasuries.
