THE DOW closed lower for the first time in eight sessions as the rally succumbed to a bout of profit-taking. Shares of financial services companies lost their lustre, while airlines hit turbulence to drag the broader market lower amid thin trading - only 593 million shares changed hands. Frothy Internet stocks helped the Nasdaq to a slim gain.

The Dow Jones average closed off 77.5 points at 8,897.96, recovering late from a 128-point dip. The Nasdaq composite closed up 4.49 points at 1,861.05.
