Around the World's Markets: NEW YORK
US STOCKS rose, with the Dow Jones completing its best six weeks since 1982, on expectations that lower interest rates around the world will fuel corporate profits. Merrill Lynch and other brokerages were the biggest gainers. "Six weeks ago, no one would have dreamed we would have come back so fast," said one trader.
The Dow rose 103.50, or 1.1 per cent, to 9159.55, the highest since July 22. The average has gained 18 per cent since 8 October and is less than 200 points away from its record 17 July close.
