US STOCKS rose yesterday, led by computer firms such as Microsoft and Compaq on expectations that they will have fast earnings growth in coming months. "You're seeing a return to leadership among large technology firms," said one analyst. "There is good consumer demand out there [for computers], and there isn't a lot of inventory."

The Dow Jones rose 54.33, or 0.6 per cent, to 9,070.47, while the Standard & Poor's 500 gained 0.9 per cent, to 1,187.70. The Nasdaq composite climbed 1.9 per cent to 2,040.64, an all-time high.
