SHARE PRICES rallied in the last half hour of trading to close sharply higher after President Bill Clinton said he would not resign.

President Clinton's much-publicised appearance at a news conference eclipsed Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan and Treasury Secretary Robert Rubin's testimonies to the House Banking Committee, which earlier sent shares lower. The Dow Jones closed up 65.39 at 8,089.78, having fallen to a low of 7,963.10 at one point.
