THE DOW ended down 81 points at 8,452, breaking a run of seven days of gains as investors took modest profits in light trading.

The Nasdaq was down 8 points at 1,693, and the S&P500 closed down 7 points at 1,070. The blue chip index was up 35.53 points for the week, and is now just 9.5 per cent shy of its July record high after the surprise cut in interest rates a week ago sparked a rebound. On the New York exchange, declining issues led advancers by four to three, with trading at 636 million shares.
