THE CAC-40 rose 39.18 points, or 0.91 per cent, to 4,354.52. Aluminium producer Pechiney, up 1.78 euro to 40.1, led the rise after saying it expected profits to grow 25 per cent by 2001.

Club Mediterranee, the resorts group, added 4.15 euros at 95.8 on its purchase of Jet Tours. Credit Lyonnais fell 3.98 euros, or 12 per cent, to 30.6, on speculation the government would sell its share at a discount.

Thomson-CSF rose 0.75 euro at 32.25 on the back of a broker recommendation.
