SHARE PRICES closed lower on continued profit-taking following last week's sharp gains.
The Bovespa index closed 111 points, or 1.04 per cent, lower at 10,416 points, off a low of 10,324 on low turnover of 452.911m reals.
"The market saw more profit-taking in a calm session and needs some news for the upward trend to return," said one trader.
The real eased to 1.845-1.850 per dollar, down from 1.835-1.845 late the previous day.
