THE STRAITS TIMES Index ended the year on a softer note yesterday, down 0.1 per cent at 1,393, a 7 per cent fall on the year.
Dealers said the closing price, above the 1,400 psychological barrier, was significant. "As long as it stayed above 1,250 by the close of the year, we could see it at the 1,900 to 2,000 levels next year," said one analyst, who expects buying interest to emerge in the new year. Brilliant Manufacturing, the most actively traded stock, closed down 1 per cent.
