The European Commission yesterday fined German car giant Volkswagen 102m ecu (pounds 68m) for forcing its Italian dealers to refuse to sell cars to Austrian and German customers, Competition Commissioner Karel Van Miert said. He said it was the largest fine ever imposed by the commission on a single company, and that the infringements of EU law had been going on since 1987. Volkswagen AG said it would lodge an appeal with the European Court against a fine.
