They needed this diver to go in at the deep end in Portsmouth

Westminster Outlook What’s the point of a reshuffle if you promote MPs to the wrong roles?

Penny Mordaunt is not just an expert in belly-flopping on television diving shows and bringing down the House of Commons with slightly naughty speeches, she is also a sub-lieutenant in the Royal Naval Reserve and MP for Portsmouth North.

Made a junior minister in the Department for Communities and Local Government, Ms Mordaunt should clearly have taken Mr Fallon’s role of preparing the regeneration of Portsmouth for when hundreds of shipyard jobs go at the end of next year.
