JACQUES DELORS, the European Commission President, hopes that the Gatt talks will resume next month in Geneva.

For the moment, the EC and the US have focused on market access in bilateral negotiations, which Delors described as the 'crucial point'. He said there had been 'progress in mood, procedure and substance' in talks between the Americans and Europeans. 'It is possible at the beginning of June to assess the situation and, I hope, to go back to Geneva for multilateral negotiations.'

President Bill Clinton said after a meeting with Mr Delors and Poul Rasmussen, the Danish Prime Minister, that the US was determined to restart the Uruguay round of Gatt and wrap up the negotiations before mid-December.
