Uncertainty, indeed, is the watchword as 1997 prepares to give way to 1998. Once-mighty Asian multinationals - whose investment in Britain was one of the bright spots of the year - are now humbled.

The British plans of the Korean chaebol (conglomerates) - LG in Wales, Samsung on Tyneside, and Hyundai in Dunfermline, to take three high-profile examples - hang in the balance as unexpected events take place on the far side of the globe.

These include the election to the presidency of long-time opposition leader Kim Dae Jung in Korea on Thursday.
