A biscuit factory is to close with the loss of more than 200 jobs, although 60 posts have been saved after months of negotiations, it was announced today.
Unite said it had secured a deal with Burton's Foods over the future of the site at Moreton, Wirral, which it maintained would save 60 jobs under threat of being axed.
The closure date of the factory has been put back a month to December, and the site's chocolate refinery will remain on the site, the union said.
Regional officer Ritchie James said: "We believe we got the best possible outcome for our members in terms of sustainable jobs and enhanced terms for those being made redundant.
"The plan to invest £2.8 million of capital investment into the plant will secure jobs for as long as can reasonably be expected, and further 58 possible posts for those workers wishing to transfer to the new Liverpool site.
"However, it is disappointing and upsetting that we have not succeeded in saving the whole site and the 219 jobs that will be lost. This is just the latest in a series of disappointments for the workforce and devastating news for its community."Reuse content
