230 Umbro jobs are in play after Nike's sell-off

More than 200 jobs could be at risk at Umbro in the North-west only days after the sportswear giant Nike agreed to sell the company to the Iconix Brand Group for $225m (£140m).

Umbro, which supplies the England football team's kit, left, employs 238 staff at its headquarters in Cheadle, in Stockport, and at an office in the centre of Manchester.

A Nike spokesman said: "Some people will be moving over to the new buyer following a transitional period whilst there will be some jobs at risk. We are currently in consultation with staff."

He added: "We can confirm that Umbro will retain a Manchester base." Nike said the consultation process would last 90 days and there would then be meetings with individual employees "once it has completed consultation with their representative bodies".
