Associated British Foods said yesterday that sugar production was up from 1 million tonnes to 1.3 million tonnes year on year, thanks to a mild winter that increased the sugar content of beets.
Last year, a very cold winter saw many farmers' crops ruined.
Meanwhile, the group's fashion chain Primark had a "cracking" Christmas, said ABF's finance director, John Bason.
In the first half, Primark sales were up 15 per cent, with like-for-like sales up 2 per cent.
