Asda aims to open more 'click-and-collect' tube delivery points

Asda vans deliver groceries to six stations for commuters who order on their way to the office

Grocery delivery points at Tube stations across London have proved so popular for Asda that the supermarket wants to roll them out to other stops on the network.

Chief executive Andy Clarke told the London Evening Standard: “Every week has been better and better. Customers are really embracing ‘click-and-collect’ and the service worked better than expected.”

Asda vans deliver groceries to six stations — East Finchley, Harrow and Wealdstone, High Barnet, Highgate, Stanmore and Epping — for commuters who order on their way to the office, allowing them to pick up their goods after work.

Clarke’s comments came as the supermarket revealed that sales fell in the three months to January 3 by 0.1 per cent, although he said Christmas had been successful. Sales for the whole year were up 0.5 per cent.

He said future expansion plans will focus extensively on London and the South-east, with 97 per cent of new and refurbished stores in the region.
