Asda and Lidl removed a host of pastry products from shelves amid fears that some may contain fragments of glass.

The urgent recall has been issued by supplier Peters Food Services which makes Asda and Lidl own-brand pastries as well as some under the Peters name.

A statement from the Food Standards Agency said: “Peter’s Food Service Ltd recalls several baked meat and vegetarian pasty products because they may contain glass fragments.

“Products include Asda, Lidl and Peter’s brand products.

“Peter’s Food Service has recalled the products listed above as they may contain glass fragments.”

Both supermarkets told customers not to eat the products which include Asda Steak Slices and Lidl Chef Select Chicken and Mushroom Slices. A full list of affected items is below.

A spokesperson for Lidl said that the chain had been notified that there was “a glass breakage from a light bulb during manufacturing”.

“We would like to reassure our customers that Lidl only works with reputable, accredited suppliers, who have strict controls and procedures in place to ensure that our products meet the high standards expected by both ourselves and our customers,” they said.

“We are, therefore, very sorry that this was not the case on this occasion and are in close communication with the supplier on this matter.”

The recall comes as Britain’s biggest supermarkets were forced to pull thousands of salads and egg sandwiches from shelves after a pesticide contamination scare.

Sainsbury's, Morrisons, Waitrose and Asda recalled products after the FSA confirmed 700,000 eggs potentially containing harmful chemical fipronil had entered the UK.
