Aviva hailed the performance of its motor and household arm yesterday, with the insurance group revealing that the division had booked more than £1bn in UK sales over the past quarter.

The 20 per cent rise to £1.09bn for the three months to 31 March represents the fifth successive quarterly increase and follows upward pressure on car premium rates and a surge in the firm's own customer numbers.

The group now has 2 million motorists on its books after adding 580,000 UK customers since the start of 2010. In the UK life and pensions business, Aviva's sales were down 2 per cent to £2.5bn as it changed its product mix to focus on more profitable business.
