The Competition Commission is worried about the Belgian giant Interbrew's £2.3 billion purchase of Bass's brewing business.

The deal might reduce competition in the beer brewing market and give Interbrew an unfairly dominant position, fears the commission.

The European Commission referred the deal to the UK last August, following complaints from UK authorities that it raised competition issues.

The Competition Commission will now discuss the issues with Interbrew before handing its report to the Trade Scretary Stephen Byers on 6 December.
