Carlton Communications, the broadcasting group, on Thursday bought Andre Deutsch, the specialist sports and media reference book publisher, from VCI Group for a sum believed to be less than £5m.

The deal will bring Carlton Books publishing contracts with Manchester United Football Club and television programmes such as Coronation Street and Emmerdale.

Established in 1951, Andre Deutsch has sold its literary and children's publishing operations to other publishers. The imprints Carlton has acquired in buying the remainder of the company include Andre Deutsch Classics and Madcap.

Nigel Walmsley, chairman of Carlton Media, said: "Carlton is developing a fully integrated media strategy that combines content with distribution. Combining Andre Deutsch and Carlton Books will create the UK's leading publisher of football and ITV-related titles."

Two-thirds of Carlton Books' revenues come from overseas. Among its titles is the ITV Formula One Grand Prix Yearbook.

Richard Green, chief executive of VCI Group, said: 'The sale of Andre Deutsch will allow [the] business to benefit from joining a books operation trading on a worldwide basis."

Carlton's shares closed up 1.5p at 538p yesterday.
