The Co-operative Group today opened a new distribution centre through a £22 million investment which will create hundreds of jobs.

The site in Avonmouth will be fully operational by May 2013, when employment levels will increase to 900.

The centre will serve almost 500 Co-op food stores in Bristol, North Somerset and South Wales.

Steve Murrells, chief executive of The Co-operative Food, said: "Our new distribution centre is a major investment, which will provide significant employment locally and will boost the local economy."
