Negotiations over the future of steel workers at Corus's Teesside factory continued yesterday as trade union leaders tried to save the 2,000 jobs threatened by the plant's closure.

Lord Mandelson expressed his support for the facility's survival earlier this week, but its future is in the balance after an Italian consortium pulled out of a deal to buy a 78 per cent stake. Several hundred Corus workers are expected to join Unite's March for Jobs in Birmingham today.
