Angela Spindler, the managing director of Debenhams, is to leave after less than a year, as the department store reshuffles its board.

Ms Spindler, the former managing director of grocer Asda’s clothing business George, will depart on 30 November. No reason was given for her departure.

Her shock exit came as Debenhams promoted its chief operating officer Michael Sharp to deputy chief executive, gaining additional responsibilities for marketing and its online business. Suzanne Harlow, the trading director for womenswear, lingerie, women's accessories and health and beauty at Debenhams, will be promoted to group trading director.
