Trying to secure the best deal from an energy supplier is a game of chance, with as many as 89 tariffs on offer, the consumer group Which? warns.
It also found that many consumers are locked in by lengthy contracts, face unreasonable time lags between switching suppliers and are notified late about price changes.
Which? found a £151 difference between two versions of EDF Energy's Online Saver tariff, while one customer found he could save £400 a year by moving to his supplier's cheapest tariff.Reuse content
