Musicians and bands across Europe will be able to choose from as many as 24 different royalty collection agencies after a ruling by the European Commission yesterday aimed at improving competition. Royalty groups will also be allowed to license material for both the internet and for broadcast use outside their home country. The changes were welcomed by groups that raised the matter with the Commission, and condemned by others as the death knell for smaller societies. In a separate ruling, the Commission also extended the copyright for musicians and singers from 50 to 95 years. For composers, it will continue to be 70 posthumous years.
