Sharp increases in financial distress at smaller firms and businesses based in the North, contrasting with marked improvements at southern-based and larger companies, have left a "starkly divided nation", according to accountants Begbies Traynor's latest corporate health check.

It found a 10.5 per cent quarter-on-quarter increase in "significant" distress among small and medium-sized firms, with many "zombie businesses" only just managing to survive.
