The fuel crisis failed to put a dent in High Street sales as official figures rose by a monthly 0.6% to be 4.6% higher than a year earlier.

Analysts had believed that the figures, which are supplied by the Office for National Statistics would have kept shoppers out of the stores and hit profuts.

While shoppers did stay away during the week-long crisis there apears to have been a strong sales surge in the aftermath of the shortage.

Food sales were up by 0.5%, while non-food sales jumped 2.1%.
