HMRC could close all 281 of its enquiry centres, putting 1,300 jobs at risk, as part of a move to save £13m a year.

Revenue and Customs plans to replace the drop-in centres with a one-to-one tax advisory service revolving around telephone conversations and home visits. A total of 13 centres will close in the North and North-east of England, including York, Sunderland, Scarborough, Newcastle, Durham and Darlington in a trial of the new approach.

If this is successful, the remaining centres out of the total of 281 will close next year, with HMRC hoping to redeploy staff elsewhere.
