Jaguar cars said yesterday it was discussing production cuts for the rest of the year because of a weakening demand for its luxury cars.

The company, a subsidiary of Ford Motor Company, said it had talked about possible cuts with union officials on Wednesday but did not anticipate laying off any staff of 7,300 at its three UK plants.

Sales in the US , which account for about half of Jaguar's sales, had been hit by the weakness of the dollar and intense competition, the company said, adding that any production cuts would not be part of the larger reorganisation of Jaguar which Ford has announced.
