John Kingman, the chief executive of UKFI, the body that looks after state-owned stakes in Britain's banks, will be the latest recruit to Rothschild, the blue-blooded bank will announce this week.

Mr Kingman, who announced he was quitting the Treasury earlier in the year, will take up the "general corporate finance role" in March. He will be barred from advising his former employer or any of the four state-backed UK banks, for a year.
