Sir: Your report (20 March) on the Cruickshank review of high street banks said that it was ordered by the Chancellor after repeated requests for the Office of Fair Trading to conduct an enquiry were rejected. This is not so. The OFT was approached by the Treasury at official level concerning competition in the provision of finance to small and medium- sized companies. We said that we would be happy to look at evidence of anti-competitive behaviour. The Director General has never received a request to conduct an investigation
