The assistant treasurer at collapsed brokerage MF Global, Edith O'Brien, whose transfer of $175m to satisfy the firm's London overdraft has become central to the hunt for missing customer funds, "took the Fifth" at a Congressional hearing last night, exercising her Fifth Amendment right to decline questioning for fear of incriminating herself.

Up to $1.6bn was missing from customer accounts at the end of MF Global's chaotic last-week trading in October 2011.
