Freeserve's losses for the quarter to 19 August doubled to £17.8m from £8.7m a year ago.

But the ISP says its number of active registered customers passed two million and it is adding nearly 10,000 a week.

The chief executive John Pluthero said: "In the first quarter, we registered our two millionth active account, recorded nearly four billion minutes of use and increased our revenue over four fold on the same period a year ago.

"Our leadership of the UK Internet market has been extended by the popularity of our unmetered access offers. Our customers have already increased their use of the Internet by nearly one half on last year."

Minutes of use during the quarter totalled four billion - an 80-per-cent increase on the previous year.

Figures included a £6.7 million multi-media advertising campaign, while £13.7 million was spent on sales and marketing.

The ISP is rolling out an internet television portal to be sold through Dixons and its services will be available through ONdigital's internet TV service, ONnet.
