The effect of the fuel crisis on high street trading was illustrated today as New Look revealed that its September profits were down £1 million on expectations. The fashion retailer said that it had lost £2 million of sales.

New Look made the comments ahead of its half-year results, which are due out in November. The company also revealed it had paid a £800,000 termination contract to its former chief executive, Jim Hodkinson. He left in May after he admitted patting the bottom of a female member of staff's bottom at an industry party.

Other costs in the first half-year included £600,000 relating to an investment in an e-commerce venture.
