Tony Blair has appointed Ian Smith, the former chief executive at Ftse 100 media giant Reed Elsevier, as economic and business adviser to the Quartet, the Middle East peacemaker.

The former prime minister is the special envoy from the Quartet – made up of the UN, EU, US and Russia – that is mediating in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Mr Smith, a Labour supporter, who left Reed last year after only eight months, declined to comment but is understood to be developing an economic plan to underpin Palestinian growth.
