Freedom of movement restrictions on workers from the 10 states that joined the EU in 2004 are lifted today.

Most EU states, though not the UK and Ireland, used temporary restrictions to stop an influx of migrant labour. Only Germany and Austria used the cap for the maximum seven-year period. The National Institute of Economic and Social Research found the restrictions elsewhere benefited the UK – migrant workers boosted output by 0.5 per cent.
